Don Lasky, SUNY Maritime (73) 2 years ago

Back in 1970, U of W Madison hosted the Collegiate Nationals in Techs, I sailed for SUNY Maritime, with Graham Hall as coach. The team consisted of skippers Gary Jobson (73) & Art Messinger (70) with crews Tim Cotter (73) & myself Don Lasky (73). Team racing was done with District teams, we were joined by Stevens Institute from NJ. I do not recall how we finished in sailing, however, the following was the highlight of the week !
Late one evening a group of Madison students snuck about 20 of us and into an administrative building, we went to the top floor, entered a hatch into a spiral fire-escape and proceded downward. Moments later, the night employees poured water down the chute and we took- off "like a bat out of hell" , 6 -8 stories down, a four ticket ride. At the bottom, we came out of the chute outside the building and ran like hell to avoid awaiting campus security ! If it's still available, I hope this year's sailors have as much fun as we did !
