About the Hosts

The 2010 Spring Championship will be hosted by the University of Wisconsin Sailing Team in conjunction with the Hoofer Sailing Club and the Wisconsin Union.

Established in 1954 with the help of Peter Harken and Art Mitchell, the UW Sailing Team has been competing ever since.  It has always been a completely student-run club team, electing 2 captains and a board every year to oversee operations. With over 40 members the team travels every weekend around the Midwest and occasional heads out East. The team has seen increasing success in the last decade and plans to continue building and continuing on this path.

The Hoofer Sailing Club was established in 1939 as part of Hoofers, an outdoor recreation organization that includes 6 clubs.  With over 1000 members, 15 types of boat, and over 120 vessels, Hoofers is one of the largest sailing clubs in the nation.  Each year paid and volunteer instructors teach hundreds of lessons to just as many eager students.

The Wisconsin Union was founded in 1907 and the Memorial Union opened it in 1928.  It is considered the center of campus and brings together students, faculty, and members of the surrounding community. Highlights of the The Union include der Rathskellar, a German-style beerhall, the Lake Front on Langdon, a beautifully windowed dining hall, Peet’s Coffee Shop, and the Daily Scoop which sells ice cream made on campus from UW cows.  Students' favorite part of the Union remains the Terrace, a scenic hang-out spot with a great view of the sailing site.
